While I'd like to come up with an original or sleeper choice here the reality is that Phantasy Star was far and away my favorite SMS game, and one of the most engaging game experiences that I have encountered; time-period when I played through it being factored in of course. I consider it to be the finest 8-bit game ever created.
Honorable mentions would be Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Ys Ancient Vanished Omen, Kenseiden, and I have a soft spot for good ol' Black Belt.

Phantasy Star! Hands Down! A great game with an engaging story! I love Rastan too! The Ninja is great fun as is Alien Syndrome. I also have a soft spot for Miracle Warriors, Y's , and Golden Axe Warrior!

Phantasy Star and Choplifter, Choplifter was the first game I got back in 88, than the rest followed.

Wonderboy III for me. I have easily a dozen clear favourites but this is No.1 for me.

I would have to go with Golden Axe Warrior. Although some others like Phantasy Star, Ys, and Wonder Boy would be really close.

Usually the arcade ports such as Double Dragon and Shinobi are my favorites, but the ones i find playing a lot is the phaser games such as Gangster Town and Missile Defense 3D (ironically, while my SMS came with the 3D adapter, it did not come with the glasses, but despite that, i have attained some decent scores without the glasses).

I guess it would be Teddy Boy since I've played it a lot. Best thing is you can choose different paths and tactics every time you play so it never gets boring. I wanna say Zillion to be cool but I've never finished it.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World would be number one by far trailing by Aztec Adventure and Quartet.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is probably my favourite SMS game to this point. The music and the mechanics are brilliant. When I learned that I could slash at the shurikens and return them to sender, I felt like a true ninja It's kind of easy though once you complete it a couple of times. I play through it at least once a month I think.

Fantasy Zone, FZII, Rygar, Wonderboy III, and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.
Make a multicart of those 5 games and that equals the best game.

Uhh that's a hard one. It might be Phantasy Star, I was exited about it all the way trough, and I have a couple copy for different console ( SMS, GBA and XBOX360) Just can't get enough of that game, but when I think SMS, I think Alex Kidd in Miracle World. It was the first videogame I ever remember playing, and loved it as a kid, and still do. Know it isn't very original. Otherwise I like Miracle Warriors, Golden Axe Warrior, Shinobi, Alex kidd in Shinobi World and Lost Stars, thought it was a really fun game. But like so many games on the SMS.

Enduro Racer. After completing the game you get a victory speech that leaves you feeling like someone really great rather than someone who spent their weekend eating junk food and playing a video game. Alex Kidd in High Tech World would be my least favorite. It was very difficult to complete with no reward for reaching the Video Arcade.
