There are times where the games will do unexpected things.
Remembering back, my older brother was playing Action Fighter and entered the SEGA Truck with his car on the second level. However, the truck appeared just before he entered the boss stage so instead of exiting the truck with a powerup, he was forced to fight against the tanks in an unarmored truck. He could actually control the truck with his controller which I always thought was kinda awesome, even though he was pretty pissed about it.
Another glitch is from Wonderyboy in Monster Land where using a rapid fire controller would make you fall through the ground and into a screen covered in random tiles.
There was also a rumor at school that you could control the birdfly in Psycho Fox, but since I haven't seen it myself maybe it was a lie.
Now there's other things to do, such as cheat in Alex Kidd in Shinobi World by pressing left & right simultaneously to warp from ladders, but maybe that's just a Emulator thing since it's impossible to press left & right together on a real controller.
Glitches happen! What odd moments have you had?

There's a glitch in Zillion where if you die when you're moving down an elevator shaft you'll become invincible, but you can't access the menu screen anymore, so you can't change characters until you reach an area where you rescue Champ or Apple.
There's a glitch in Alex Kidd in Miracle World that allows you to warp through a most of the final castle, but I don't recall how to do it anymore. There's also a sound glitch in AKiMW that creates a sound like a DJ turntable scratching if you break a rock at a certain point during the main BGM tune, during the:
Du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, doot doot Du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, du-du, doot doot...(!)
Break a rock right where that (!) is and you'll hear it. My friend and I used to do it constantly.
You can also fight Janken the Great several times. All you have to do is revisit the room by going back down the ladder after you defeat him and climb to the top. You get the massive point bonus each time you defeat him, not that score matters in Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

The only "glitch" I remember is, one Saturday when I was very young playing Phantasy Star with my twin brother ( Yes I have an evil twin and yes we are identical ) we were in newly uncharted territory and then it was Monday! ...Still happens from time to time...
